Barolo, 2017

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Despite this showing the sumptuous smooth roundness of a warm vintage, there is also impressive purity and a real “La Morra” typicity. Pretty and easy to enjoy, if not complicated - this offers alluring aromatic squashed strawberry fruit mixed with dried asian spices. Rich, but seamless and delicate, yet with a solid enough grip to knit the flavours together. Beautifully judged. A very attractive ‘regular’ Barolo that is a blend of wine from Crus vineyards in La Morra including Croera (now known by its wider name Serradenari,) Roncaglie, Boiolo and Fossati. The wine is aged for 24 months in 20% new oak barriques.

93/100Monica Larner,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

This wine draws its fruit from the Serradenari, Boiolo, Fossati and Roncaglie vineyards in La Morra. The M. Marengo 2017 Barolo achieves a level of immediate elegance and balance that was by no means easy to achieve in this challenging and hot vintage. The Marengo family has successfully harnessed the floral and more graceful side of the vintage fruit, with wild berry and powdered licorice. You do feel the youthful tannic tightness in this release, so give this wine a few extra years to unwind and soften. This was a release of 10,700 bottles.

The 2017 Barolo is a gorgeous wine. Bold, rich and ample in the glass, the Barolo possesses terrific depth and tons of character. Juicy dark cherry, plum, spice and licorice meld together in a forward, bold Barolo that will drink nicely with minimal cellaring. There is some edginess to the tannin, but this is nicely done.
