Barolo, 2021
The debut wine from young Stefano Marengo, designated by a white label. In a departure from the style of his parents, Stefano chooses to ferment and age in wooden tronconic vat. Modest and approachable more or less from release, it offers a nice melange of supple redcurrants and red plums, framed by a bit of supporting oak influence. Rented vines from friends with parcels in La Morra’s Boiolo vineyard.
critic reviews
The M. Marengo 2021 Barolo presents a beautiful bouquet that is shaped by optimally ripe fruit and careful oak aging. The primary and secondary aromas complement each other beautifully, with no one side overpowering the other. In line with the character of the vintage, the quality of fruit is sharp and clear. There is cassis, dark currant, crushed stone and something sweet like candied orange peel. It sits firmly on the palate with tight tannins.
The 2021 Barolo is a dense, powerful wine. Black cherry, incense, leather, licorice and dark spice add to an impression of somber gravitas. This rich, full-bodied Barolo offers tons of immediacy. I would prefer to drink it over the next handful of years.
