Brunello di Montalcino, Fornace, 2013

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

A plumper, fleshier wine than the Ragnaie VV but with a wonderful seam of acidity to it. This warmer plot is tailor-made for the fresh 2013 vintage. Ample, robust, juicy ,bold yet fresh. Bursting with voluptuous red and dark berry fruits, with notes of Griotte, strawberry and Victoria plum with a fresh herb and ground spice character adding dimension. Impressive. Fornace is a single plot in the higher part of the Castelnuovo dell’Abate zone. Aged for 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks.

critic reviews

94/100Eric Guido,Vinous

Dark and rich, with masses of balsamic-tinged black cherries and raspberries lifted by hints of mint, the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Fornace is impossible to ignore. This marries the vivid fruit of Montalcino's southeast with crunchy minerality and tantalizing acidity. It finishes with incredible length—lightly structured and spicy, with a bump of residual acidity that maintains a fantastic freshness. The 2013 is already entering a pleasurable stage, but it has many years of improvement ahead.

Le Ragnaie's 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Fornace is a slightly more robust and structured expression. It has a sturdier vinous exoskeleton, so to speak. For this reason, it needs longer to age and will undoubtedly benefit from more years in your cellar. In fact, I tasted this wine several times over the course of many hours and was delighted by the steady and positive evolution it showed. Given time, the wine gives wild berry and earthy tones that come together with encouraging symmetry.
