Corton Charlemagne, Grand Cru, 2020
This is a vivid, haunting Corton Charlemagne that dances and shimmers across the palate. The change in plot that took effect in 2016 has transformed this cuvee. While there are layers and layers of tightly packed, Grand Cru flavour here, there is great levity – a lesson in bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better and that finely wrought detail is a wonderful thing. Flowers garland fine white fleshed fruits, a touch of peach, crushed stones and raw nuts. Very delicious indeed. Since 2016 this is now from a south facing parcel in Le Charlemagne, adjacent to his Corton Pinot vines. Very different from Follin's Cortons pre 2016 which came from more Pinot Noir orientated soils.
critic reviews
The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru leans more towards tropical fruit on the nose: banana and tinned pineapple. It's seductive if a little more obvious than its peers. It feels a bit blowsy after the superior Domaine de la Vougeraie. The palate is balanced with ripe, honeyed fruit, unctuous in texture, what feels like a late-picked, possibly botrytised Corton-Charlemagne that just lacks a bit of panache and mineralité on the finish. It is one of the earlier-drinking wines from the famous hillside but still enjoyable. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.
