Clos des Goisses, Brut, LV, 1999

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Charles arrived at the winery in time for the blending of the 1999 vintage, which makes this the lastvintage of the old regime. Aged under cork and disgorged just prior to being released 25 years postvintage, as is the L.V. tempo, it hails from the generous yet generally cool, ’99 growing season, a yearthat produced very pure grapes. “Very often the best vintages in the long run are simply those withthe purest grapes”, Charles commented sagely. Classically and satisfyingly L.V. in style, this openswith savoury notes of fresh cep, roast chicken skin, roasted nut and confit lemon, grabbing theattention, before freshening and opening to revel more citrus leaning scents and a note of freshpeach. A Perigord truffle note infuses the finish alongside salt and gentle chalky notes. Clear, persistent, and beautifully aged yet still remarkably fresh, this bottle epitomises what we love somuch about these LV releases. Yet more proof that Goisses ages brilliantly, and that aged Goisses isone of life’s great treats.

96/100Yohan Castaing,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

A blend of 59% Pinot Noir and 41% Chardonnay, the 1999 Extra Brut Clos des Goisses L.V. reveals a complex, spicy bouquet of jasmine, flowers, smoke, guava, honey, confit orange and exotic fruit. Muscular, concentrated and beautifully tannic, it's full-bodied and has a vinous, structured mid-palate and crystalline texture, concluding with a long, toasty, pure and saline finish. This elegant, refined Champagne is the first vintage blended by Charles Philipponnat. Disgorged in March 2024 with 4.5 grams per liter dosage.

The Clos des Goisses Long Veillessmont 1999 is second release of this vintage 25 years post-harvest. Redolent of ethereal, creamy autolytic aromas with flashes of citrus and flint that with time evolve into notes of raw oat milk, wet wheat and wood shavings. It changes rapidly in the glass. The palate is less about fruit and more about autolytic, yeasty notes that are enlivened by remarkably vibrant acid and lean aromatic notes of wet stones and minerals. While it is a unicorn stylistically, it nonetheless finishes with vigor; chiseled and clean. Disgorged March 2024 after 25 years on the lees and finished with 4.5 grams per liter dosage

The 1999 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses L.V. is stunning. A Champagne of soaring intensity and pedigree, the 1999 is simply magnificent. Citrus, marzipan, chamomile, baked apple tart and yellow flowers open effortlessly. The 1999 is a timeless wine. It shows some signs of age and yet remains wonderfully fresh. Its purity and finesse are just remarkable. I can't wait to taste it in finished form. Tasted à la volée, with no dosage.
