More compact and elemental than its Herrenberg sibling, the Abtsberg Spätlese is soaked in apple droplets, freshly cut grapes, a little fruit skin and latterly dried tropical fruit notes as the wine opens up. Fine, zippy acidity and rock salt on the finish, all underpinned by a sleek, wiry blue slate feel. Drink the Herrenberg while the Abtsberg sleeps.

The 2022 Riesling Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Spätlese is still under a slight veil of reduction. The palate then presents a serene cloud of gently sweet, creamy fruit aromatic with grapefruit skin, Mirabelle plum, an edge of Seville orange peel and a shimmer of white pepper. The sweetness is subtle and precise, framed with fine, mouth-watering lemon acidity. Absolute zestiness appears on the finish. (Sweet)
