Riesling, Cuvée Colette, 2023
A Riesling centred around pressed limes and oils, with an aromatic near-Thai suggestion of lemongrass atop ripe yellow fruits. Exotic in its aromatic complexity, but on the palate, it is surprisingly medium in body with a powerfully deep and horizontal, stony finish. Highly impressive with great acidity. Altenbourg is a well-known, unofficial Premier Cru site, planted on limestone soils. Eddy explained that the limestone produces Rieslings that take longer to open up, though in our view this 2023 is very good already. Total production sits at just 2,000 bottles. The wine has only been available for export since 2022.
critic reviews
The 2023 Riesling Cuvée Colette was picked in the lieu-dit Bonnes Terres, at the foot of the Schlossberg, with deep deposits of granitic sands. The vines used are up to 60 years old. The nose is subtle, offering only brief glimpses of wet stone and Mirabelle. The palate stretches out into lemony zestiness, with lovely dryness and that granitic, naked astringency akin to pith.
