    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note
Chapelle d'Ausone, St Emilion Grand Cru, 2009

The second wine from Ausone is produced from 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc in 2009. This is extraordinarily complex for a second wine; the bouquet is magnificent, offering notes of minerals, slate, seriously high toned violets, cloves, damsons and a panoply of perfumed purple and crimson fruit. This is utterly seductive, bursting with fruit yet tight knit, structured and with laser precision. Utterly harmonious.

More serious, with the impact of Cabernet Sauvignon striking in the blend, partly because the vintage has the kind of structure that favours dark fruits character. Gives a pause to the fruit, a blast of fresh air between the opening beats and the close of play, has tension and grip, and is serious. Decades ahead. Winemaker/cellar master Philippe Baillarguet, overseen by Pauline Vauthier and father Alain, 100% new oak for ageing. Cabernet Sauvignon here, planted in 2006, on the slopes. 11th generation of the Vaulthiers.

Good deep red-ruby. Vibrant aromas of blueberry, menthol and flowers. Juicy, concentrated and tactile, with a distinctly penetrating quality to the blueberry, licorice, fresh herb and mineral flavors. A bit lean and wound-up today in an Old World way, this nicely concentrated second wine needs time to soften in the bottle.
