Château Calon Ségur

Château Calon Ségur, 3ème Cru Classé, St Estèphe, 2009

justerini & brooks tasting note

Madame Gasqueton is notoriously difficult to arrange an appointment with. Either she is the most popular lady in Bordeaux or she likes to make us sweat... This year, despite our every attempts, we were told NON. But being resourceful chaps and chapesses we requested a fresh sample to taste in privacy. Calon Segur is always one of the most charming, most seductive and most elegant wines from the northern Medoc. It somehow combines great power and presence with femininity and sophistication. Made from 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2009 Calon Segur is the most powerful and concentrated effort we have tasted from this estate in many years, possibly ever. There are notes of crème de cassis, pencil shavings, cut flowers, spice and a hint cedar. The palate is packed with dense fruit, blackcurrants, hedgerow fruit and crème de mure. For all its power, it hasn’t lost any of its grace. The tannins are silky smooth and the result is a picture of harmony and balance. A wonderful effort.

critic reviews

98/100Jane Anson,Inside Bordeaux

Plum colour, still intense right through to the core of the wine, this is just a near-perfect St Estèphe, concentrated yet finessed, with balance, less muscular than you would find in most vintages of Calon today, still with depth but also nuance, full of pleasure and joy, cocoa bean, cigar box, blackcurrant, smoked earth, oyster shell finish. Owned by Denise Gasqueton at the time, and makes me a little nostalgic for the old school charms of this era at Calon.

The 2009 Calon-Segur is deep garnet in color and opens with a beautiful fragrance of redcurrant preserves, cassis, black cherry compote and red roses plus nuances of cigar box and cinnamon stick. Medium-bodied and wonderfully elegant in the mouth, it has a compelling line of very ripe, fine-grained tannins and oodles of freshness supporting the fragrant layers, finishing long and perfumed.

The 2009 Calon-Ségur seems to have more expressive Merlot on the nose vis-à-vis its peers, black cherries mixed with hints of cassis, leather and allspice. More tertiary scents emerge with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, quite fresh and lithe, well judged acidity with a high-toned, iodine-infused finish that caresses the mouth. Approachable for a Saint-Estèphe and yet there is the depth to suggest that it will age with style. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting.
