Château Calon Ségur
Château Calon Ségur, 3ème Cru Classé, St Estèphe, 2011
justerini & brooks tasting note
Calon Segur is the most northerly estate in the 1855 classification and although it is unable to compete with near rivals Montrose and Cos d’Estournel in terms of power and weight, this is always a refined, charming, elegant wine which has a loyal legion of followers. Produced from 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, this estate managed to avoid the hail in early September. Excellent ripeness in the Cabernet fruit gives this a real floral fragrance and freshness. The perfumed bouquet displays notes of violets, minerals and cherry liqueurs. On the palate there is ample sweet black fruit, a silky texture, good length, and a hint of dark chocolate on finish. A very refined effort.
