    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

A complex nose with wonderful botrytis complexity, peach kernel, almond husk, nori, white pepper and grapefruit pith. On the palate, great acidity and a palpable and somewhat rare sense of energy as brisk paced citrus fruits dip their pithy toes in a pool of honey and fragrant white flowers. Freshness, prettiness, and no sense of heaviness – very much on the uplifting side of Barsac and Sauternes. A real success.

The 2019 Coutet has quite a flamboyant, Germanic bouquet with petrol-infused botrytized fruit, though it lacks a bit of complexity and nuance. The palate is well-balanced with orange zest, marmalade and quince on the entry. Moderate depth, and quite linear towards the finish. It doesn't quite deliver the panache of the best wines of 2019 and there has been better Coutet's in recent years, but there is potential here. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

Pale lemon-gold in color, the 2019 Coutet sashays out with vibrant lime cordial, lemonade, and grapefruit oil notes followed by suggestions of fresh hay, powdered ginger, and honeyed toast. The palate is rich and decadent with an amazing line of freshness and a very long, spice-sparked finish.

Golden yellow in colour, concentrated and enticing. The focus is on texture and architecture rather than flavour on the first beats, but it opens to show enjoyable quince, lime, white flowers. Rich through the mid palate with welcome slate scrape and mandarin zest bitterness on the finish.
