Notes

There have been so many wonderful wines made during the 44-year tenure of Xavier Borie, it's hard to pick favourites, suffice to say the 2022 is right up there with the very best. Produced from 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Merlot, this opens with a more fruit driven bouquet with subtle hints of tobacco, cracked earth, floral notes of violets and a hint of liquorice. The core is wonderfully vibrant and full of precision; ample purple fruit intertwined with mineral notes, it feels stylish and unforced with a really classy salinity. A plush, enveloping, contoured palate which is texturally alluring, this GPL caresses the mouth with glorious flavours and so much detail. Striking tannins provide grip, complexity and reverberating length. Emeline explained that 2022 was hotter than 2003, but they had some welcome rain when they needed it. Winemaking was as normal with gentle extractions, just some pump-overs at the beginning before they closed the vats. The cuvaison lasted three weeks, which is more or less normal – they were conscious not to overdo it. The result is one of the most spectacular wines of the Medoc and one of the all-time great GPLs. “The 2022 Grand Puy Lacoste was picked from 7 to 23 September and contains more Merlot due to the high quality of the fruit, matured in 75% new oak. There is 14.2% alcohol. Therefore, this lends this GPL a little more precocity and sensuality compared to other vintages, not cut from the same

Notes
The 2022 Grand Puy Lacoste was picked from 7 to 23 September and contains more Merlot due to the high quality of the fruit, matured in 75% new oak. There is 14.2% alcohol. Therefore, this lends this GPL a little more precocity and sensuality compared to other vintages, not cut from the same "classical" cloth as, say, the 2019 or 2020. Underlying this velvety veneer are enticing traits of freshly-rolled tobacco and undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-sculpted tannins. Silky smooth in texture, so much so that it belies that backbone underneath. There is a peacock's tail of mineral-rich, quite peppery black fruit on the finish, completing a Pauillac endowed with huge potential.

Château Grand Puy Lacoste

Château Grand Puy Lacoste

A very old Chateau - it's first mention in official documents appears at the beginning of the XVIth century - this estate extends over 225 acres in a single plot of land to the south of Pauillac - which is where the original name "Grand-Puy" came from. Mr Lacoste added his name to the Château when he bought the property and kept it until the epidemic of phylloxera at the end of the XIXth century. GPL's reputation in the wine world will be down in part to Mr. Raymond Dupin, a legendary figure in the Medoc, who was proprietor until 1978 when he sold the estate to M. Borie.

Nowadays, François-Xavier Borie is managing things. He renewed the cellars of the Château just before producing the great vintage of 1982. The vinification and ageing of Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is conducted with the same technique and attention to detail, as those of the other estates managed by Borie - such as Château Haut-Batailley.
