    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

The Frey family, Swiss bankers with a taste for fine wines, have this year added Rhone producer Jaboulet to their portfolio of wine holdings, which has also included Chateau La Lagune since the 1960’s. They clearly have a sharp eye for unexploited potential and one hopes that Jaboulet will benefit to the same extent that La Lagune has. The wines from this expansive vineyard in Ludon, at the southern end of the Médoc, have become steadily oakier, darker and more structured since the mid-nineties, and the prices have also become more serious, but there is a discernible house style, and a real elegance, charm and character that remains, all of which explains the huge popularity of this wine. The 2005 is deep purple, almost black. It shows strength on the nose, ripe berries and flowers, sweet blackcurrant fruit on the palate with grippy tannins that lead to a long, very smooth finish. Very good.

Heading to tertiary in colour, gentle bricking around the edges, this is rich and complex on the nose, real depth of fruit, a ton of mint and eucalpytus, bitter chocolate and black pepper on the finish. Still plenty of structure at 17 years old, with the tannins now silky in texture. Definitely in its drinking window, but no need to rush, has a few more years of stretching out before it is fully at its peak. Has the energy that you find in the great wines of the vintage, and a ton of character. Impressive, one of the value 2005s to look out for.

The 2005 La Lagune has an attractive bouquet with plenty of blackberry, raspberry, minerals and dried flowers, the oak neatly integrated. This blossoms nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but firm tannin, just a little chewiness on the front end but considerable weight and concentration at the back. Like many 2005s there is a solid backbone to this wine, to wit, a La Lagune built for long-term ageing. There is firm grip on the finish and as such it needs another two or three years in bottle. Tasted at the La Lagune vertical at the château.
