Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild, 1er Cru Classé, Pauillac, 1995

justerini & brooks tasting note

As we have mentioned in our note for Duhart Milon, there is more than a passing resemblance with these wines. Stylistically they are definitely from the same stable, although the Lafite takes this to a different level. Produced from 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, this is intensely Cabernet in character. Dark, minty, cool crème de cassis flavours mingle with hints of potpourri. At this stage it is brooding and difficult to see into, but there is so much raw potential. This is the epitome of classic, noble Pauillac - demure, graceful and unforced; this has such effortless power and length. It does require quite a bit of concentration; initially its form is rather slab-like, but with inspection comes the fine perfume and clear, delineated hedgerow fruit nuances. This is so assured with classical, athletic Lafite lines and a grand, commanding tannic structure. An absolute beauty.

critic reviews

93+/100Stephen Tanzer,Vinous

Dark ruby-red. Sappy, expressive aromas of cherry, plum, minerals, woodsmoke and game, plus an exotic suggestion of baked apple. Rather subtle on the attack, then quickly expands to fill the mouth. A big, deep, very rich vintage for Lafite, unusually generous at this early stage and extremely long on the aftertaste. But went into a shell with aeration, and showed a hint of tobacco leaf vegetility. Finishing notes of coconut, woodsmoke and tobacco add flavor interest.
