Pauline Calvet's Picque Caillou estate is situated between Haut Brion and Merignac airport. It has been on a fine run of form and often tops more illustrious names from the Pessac commune. Produced from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot and aged in 40% new oak barrels, the 2015 offers fine aromas of bright bramble fruit. The palate has lovely purity of fruit; crème de mûre, fine herbs, damsons and spice. It is honest and unlike many of the unsuccessful wines at UGC Pessac Leognan doesn't push too much. As a result it retains freshness and harmony. Very good indeed.
Chateau Picque Caillou was built in 1780 in what was then the countryside outside of Bordeaux. It is situated near the Rocade and more importantly, just a few hundred metres from Chateau Haut Brion.
Isabelle and Paulin Calvet took over the management of the estate prior to purchasing it in 1997. This dynamic family has brought a fresh burst of life to the property. With the active involvement of superstar winemaker Denis Dubourdieu, Picque Caillou is now producing award winning wines that are well worth hunting down.
