Gevrey Chambertin, Clos St Jacques, 1er Cru, 2023

justerini & brooks tasting note

The one and only. Genuine complexity and layering here, with fruit, flowers, spice and tobacco leaf all in abundance. There’s such poise and such composure on the palate; deep long flavours and highly refined tannins. As sophisticated as Gevrey gets, with the cool precision of Clos St Jacques, but also, the out and out charm of the vintage. It is not going too far to proclaim this a humdinger of the highest order. One of Gevrey’s great Premiers Crus situated high up on the slope, many believe it to be more deserving of Grand Cru status than a number of Gevrey’s more dubious Grands Crus. This high situation and red clay-based soils make for wines of freshness, tension and well-defined structure. The vineyard was planted in 1957, a massale selection of Pinot fin made by Bruno's father, resulting in low yields – rarely more than 30hl/ha.

critic reviews

93-95/100William Kelley,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques offers up aromas of wild berries and plums mingled with orange zest, rose petals and violets. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and lively, with a fleshy core of fruit and sweet structuring tannins, it's another terrific cuvee from this reenergized domaine.

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru offers an extremely focused and detailed bouquet with vibrant, mineral-inflected redcurrant and strawberry fruit. The medium-bodied palate features ripe dark cherry and strawberry on the entry, with a hint of vanilla from the oak. It finishes quite linear in style, as if it's holding something back for later. This is one for the patient among you.
