Puligny Montrachet, Les Caillerets, 1er Cru, 2009
For a red wine-orientated domaine it is quite a feat to prodcue one of the great premier cru whites of Burgundy. Etienne owns 0.8ha of the fabulous 3 ha Puligny Cailleret vineyard. Floral touches of violet, ripe juicy peach flavours, creamy and honeyed, supple but somehow sufficiently crisp, not remotely cloying, this is intense yet never brutish, an exquisite example of Puligny finesse.
critic reviews
Bright, pale yellow. Soil-driven aromas of apple, white pepper and crushed stone. Dense, broad and fine-grained, with terrific lemony energy to the flavors of spices and dusty stone. Very rich but given definition and grip by its dusty, tactile mouth feel. The very long, floral finish perfumes the mouth. Superb.
The 2009 Puligny-Montrachet Le Cailleret is a relatively accessible wine. The fruit is attractive and silky, but ultimately this comes across as a bit flabby and lacking acidity. Accordingly, it is best enjoyed sooner rather than later. Anticipated maturity: 2012+. Various American importers, including: Martin Scott Wines, Little Neck, NY; tel. (516) 327-0808
