Volnay, Taillepieds, 1er Cru, 2015
Like the Mitans this is fermented only with whole bunch, the ageing is with a shade more new oak (approximately 40%) but this is barely discernible, it’s just a fundamentally different wine with a strong terroir character. Taillepieds has gravelly top soil over limestone resulting in tight-grained powerful wine. Aromatic and deep, profound dark fruit notes of dark cherry, bramble and bullace, together with mineral touches of ink, earth and crushed stones. The flavours build and grow in the mouth to foil the powerful tannins, the finish is extended and complex. Smart and serious.
critic reviews
The 2015 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru has a very Volnay-like bouquet of plush red cherries and strawberry aromas, voluptuous and sensual while maintaining impressive delineation. The palate is well balanced with a crisp line of acidity, fine tannin and grainy texture but palpable minerality toward the persistent finish. Backward, yes, but tons of potential. This was impressive in barrel and now it is impressive in bottle. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.
