Volnay, Taillepieds, 1er Cru, 2016
With its floral charm, electric energy and finely-etched but binding structure this is a true all-rounder. Exemplary Volnay that offers fruit blossom and violet aromas alongside cool, fresh black and red cherry flavour notes with touches of cherry stone and salt. The mineral component is distinctive but melds well with the perfumed yet sapid fruit. Like the Mitans this is fermented only with whole bunch, the ageing is with a shade more new oak (approximately 40%) but this is barely discernible, it’s just a fundamentally different wine with a strong terroir character. Taillepieds has gravelly top soil over limestone resulting in tight-grained powerful wine. These are the domaine’s oldest Volnay vines, 60 years-old.
critic reviews
The 2016 Volnay Taillepieds 1er Cru has a clean, pure and transparent bouquet with perfumed, floral red berry fruit with more sous-bois character evident compared to its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with a crunchy red fruit note on the entry, quite grippy in the mouth. I find the finish a little bony and requiring more flesh. If I did not know this was a Volnay I would have put it down as a Pommard. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting in Burgundy.
