Volnay, Taillepieds, 1er Cru, 2023
This smells rather good, a stony, restrained nose that draws you into its rocky lair, with hints of red fruits, fine floral notes over a deeply mineral core. So very Taillepieds in its combination of fruit and stone. Serious stuff. An iconic De Montille cuvee, Taillepieds has gravelly topsoil over limestone resulting in tight-grained powerful wine. These are the domaine's oldest Volnay vines at 70 years old. Fermented with two thirds whole bunch and 25% new oak.
critic reviews
Utilizing 50% whole clusters, the 2023 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet with red cherries, strawberry fruit and potpourri, with the stems more assimilated here compared to the Les Mitans. Fresh and saline, the palate is medium-bodied with finely knit tannins and a brittle, chalky-textured finish. Give this at least a couple of years in bottle. This is very promising.
