Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Domaine Jean Grivot, Nuits St Georges, Les Pruliers, 1er Cru, 2020

One of the richest, most voluptuous Pruliers we have tasted - silky ripe fruit notes of griotte and bramble with hints of cranberry and kirsch liqueur fruits. Full to the brim with intense, ripe, gregarious fruit. Les Pruliers, one of the unsung heroes of Nuits St Georges situated on the south side of the appellation, yields classic, complete Nuits that combines power, freshness, richness and minerality.

ABV:
14.5%
90-92/100
Neal Martin, Vinous

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru is the one cuvée that is more confit on the nose, missing the delineation of other cuvées from Grivot, mulberry and cassis scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet, candied entry, quite fleshy and ripe, fine acidity with vibrant red fruit towards the finish, a little heady but still pleasurable.

Domaine Jean Grivot

Domaine Jean Grivot

Etienne Grivot succeeded his father, Jean, in 1987, and today presides over 15 hectares of vines spread accross Nuits, Vosne, Vougeot and Echézeaux. This is one of the modern-day, benchmark Burgundian domaines. The estate’s densely-planted old vines (the average age is 40 years old) produce naturally-low yields and, together with Etienne’s organic approach to viticulture and sensitive winemaking, result in vivid, pure, very well-balanced Burgundies. The wines are much more softly extracted than when Etienne first started, the winemaking is incredibly flexible, depending on the vintage, but usually only 5% of stalks are retained, and rarely more than a third of the barrels are new. Daughter Mathilde and son Hubert have committed to working at the Domaine and have taken on more responsibility from Etienne since 2017, so the estate's future seems secure. A reference point Burgundy Domaine.
