Aloxe Corton, Clos du Chapitre, 1er Cru, 2018
One of the domaine's flagship wines. A silky, persistent, expansive quality here. A slowly sprawling array of flavours gradually cover the palate - damson, cherry and strawberry. Deft, suave and detailed with a sumptuous feel yet with a power and richness sitting not too far in the background. Grace and stature in equal measure. A magnificent south-facing parcel of 50-year-old vines towards the bottom of the Clos where the soil is redder clay than further up, with traces of flint and limestone. De-stalked prior to fermentation. Aged in 20% new oak barrels for 12 months followed by six months in tank.
critic reviews
The 2018 Aloxe-Corton Clos du Chapitre 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet of what I discerned as slightly darker and more forthcoming fruit compared to the nascent 2019, the menthol element reduced but extant. The palate is a little chewy and more muscular by comparison, grippy, with a well-defined and black plum toward the finish. This will drink extremely well over the next decade.
