Volnay, Les Caillerets, 1er Cru, 2020
One of the more elegant and delicate Premiers Crus of this cellar. The bright minerally red berry fruit glides gently across the palate; it offers an almost floating quality. Characterised more by elegance, texture and clean, clear lines than power or muscle, this is a beautiful, high-toned Volnay. Situated on the south side of village, Cailleret's steep, well exposed slope and poor, stony soil make it one of the finest Crus in the commune. Part of the blend is from vines planted in 1990 another part is from 50-year-old vines bought by Guillaume in 2013.
critic reviews
Revisited in bottle, the 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets wafts from the glass with aromas of sweet raspberries and cherries mingled with dark chocolate and warm spices. Medium to full-bodied, ample and vibrant, with sweet, powdery tannins and lively acids, it concludes with a bright, mineral finish.
The 2020 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru comes from vines planted in 2000 (the older vines purchased several years ago were uprooted in this vintage.) It has a more intense bouquet than the Fremiets with black cherries, raspberry punnet, crushed stone and silex aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black cherry and raspberry fruit, a taut line of acidity, linear and strict with a brisk white pepper tinged, quite Pommard-like, almost clinical finish. Excellent, but unapologetically hardcore.
