Nuits St Georges, Les Vaucrains, 1er Cru, 2018
Darker and more mineral than the redder, more gregarious Les St.-Georges. This is intense and powerful but offers such energy and dimension. Layer upon layer of bramble, black cherry, stone, earth and mineral gradually unfurl. Serious, sophisticated and imposing. Mind-blowing that such a dense and profound wine can have such lift and vitality, leaving your palate invigorated. Exceptional. One of the great vineyards of Nuits that often rivals Les St.-Georges, above which it sits directly, albeit in a more brooding and muscular style.
critic reviews
The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains 1er Cru does not quite deliver the complexity of its peers, perhaps just a touch of reduction at play here. I suspect that this just requires time. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, dense and weighty, a "heavy" NSG that lacks grace and mineralité, though I appreciate the spiciness and dark chocolate note on the aftertaste. Quintessentially 2018 Côte de Nuits in style. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.
