Cuvée 1522, Philipponnat, 2014

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

From a vintage that remains a little under the radar, Philipponnat's1522 2014 boasts beautiful tangy bright golden fruit, great precision and a real sense of dynamism. It is both intense but beautifully fresh too, the 81% of Pinot Noir dominates and indeed you could be forgiving for thinking it a Blanc de Noirs and yet there's an elegance and gorgeous textural quality that comes from the Chardonnay. It reminds me a little bit of Krug 169th Edition. You get the impression this would be delicious with or without bubbles - always a good sign.

critic reviews

94/100Antonio Galloni,Vinous

The 2014 Extra-Brut Cuvée 1522 is terrific. Bright and finely cut, the 2014 is immediately full of charm, starting with a bouquet that is absolutely beguiling. Dried pear, chamomile, mint and orange peel lend quite a bit of nuance, but it is the wine"s energy and bright acids that I find most attractive. Dosage is 4.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: March, 2021. (Originally published in May 2021)

Disgorged in March 2021 with 4.5 grams per liter dosage, Philipponnat's 2014 Extra-Brut Grand Cru Cuvee 1522 exhibits aromas of crisp yellow apples, stone fruit, buttery pastry and citrus oil. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and elegantly vinous, with a layered core of fruit, bright girdling acids and a seamless profile, it's beautifully balanced and should age with considerable grace. As I've written before, this cuvee derives its name from the year in which the Philipponnat family settled in Ay, and it's intended to foreground the virtues of the wines of that village.
