St Joseph, Les Grisières, 2022

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Andre describes his Grisieres vineyard as having granitic soils with lots of stones in the topsoil. Vinified by parcel, the more clay rich component sees 30% whole bunch and the oldest parcel, where the soils are lighter is destemmed, arriving at an average of 15% whole bunches across the blend. Naturally more concentrated and serious than the straight St Joseph, Les Grisieres offers a more compact, ageworthy line of acidity and tight dark and brambly red fruits laced with bramble and graphite, leading in to a very complete, very long finish. A blend of old Syrah vines in the commune of Chavanay in the north part of St Joseph near Condrieu. Made from 85% de-stalked Syrah (15% whole bunches were included in the 2017 for the first time) and aged in 20% new oak barriques for 18 months.

Matured for 24 months in 400-liter barrels (20% new), the 2022 Saint-Joseph Les Grisieres reveals a dense, complex and elegant bouquet of licorice, dark wild berries, espresso and spices. Medium to full-bodied, tense and vibrant, it's layered with a structured tannic frame, nicely integrated in a fleshy core of fruit, concluding with a long, delicate and tense finish. Once the structured tannins recede (after four to five years of aging in the cellar), it should be an utterly excellent bottle.

Up to 70-year-old vines provided the grapes for the 2022 Saint-Joseph Les Grisières. The tasted barrel samples which will compose the final blend left a promising impression. Ripe black fruits, crushed violets, cedar and graphite rise up from the glass. Medium- to full-bodied, the 2022 exudes ample flavor concentration yet manages to maintain sufficient freshness. Polished tannins lend gentle structure. Readers should note that no 2021 was made.
