Château Mont Redon, Châteauneuf du Pape, Le Plateau, 2017

2017

Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Château Mont Redon, Châteauneuf du Pape, Le Plateau, 2017

Mont-Redon has always been envied for its holdings on the Plateau of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, considered one of the greatest terroirs in the region. In 2016 owner Pierre Fabre decided to make a selection from the best spots within the Plateau for the first time, amounting to an 850 case production. It is made in the same way as the other wines, gently extracted, but with an extra six months in mainly oak barrels – 18 months in total. A special wine that deservedly sits among the region’s finest. 2017 is its second incarnation, a mighty impressive follow up to the 2016. The result of a mere 18hl/ha this is a brilliantly savoury style. Whilst there is clearly lots of concentration here, it is less dry and overbearing than the low yields might suggest, also a little less oaky than the 2016. Brilliantly judged, offering flavours of sandalwood, stone, garrigues, sage, dark berry and cherry fruit. Really complex, polished and assured. Stunning.

Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous

Aged for 18 months in a combination of new and old oak barriques and then another year in stainless steel tanks, the 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Le Plateau de Mont-Redon checks in at 15.5% alcohol. Pale ruby-colored, it wafts from the glass with enticing aromas of ripe raspberry, forest strawberry, blackberry, black cherry, leather, tobacco, cloves and a pinch of white pepper. Full-bodied, well-balanced by lively acids and framed in velvety tannins, it concludes with a savory finish.

Château Mont Redon

Château Mont Redon

Château Mont-Redon, established in 1344, is one of the oldest wine-producing Estates in France and the largest single property in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Estate includes 100 hectares of the most perfectly-sited vineyards in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, spread over the region’s three main soil types: the western limestone slopes, sand and galet stones on the plateau. The wines are made by destalking and then vinifying all of the cépages together, to promote aromatic complexity, and are blended after 18 to 24 months ageing in cask. These are elegant, widely-loved examples of Châteauneuf that age well. Now, with joint owner and winemaker Pierre Fabre directing the estate, the Château's wines are poised for great critical acclaim, too, whilst retaining their innate drinkability. Pierre's new cuvée, Le Plateau, is emblematic of the quality Mont-Redon are now producing - a strict selection of prime fruit from Châteauneuf's plateau, amounting to an 850 case production that will only be bottled separately in the best years.
