Châteauneuf du Pape, Le Plateau, 2019
A de-stalked blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 8% Mourvedre. Half Aged In oak barriques for a year, 30% of which are new, and half in tank. A seriously intense Mont-Redon Chateauneuf, one of the best young wines we have tasted from them, alongside the 2016. Wonderful cherry blossom aromatics immediately saturate the senses. The palate offers waves of gripping dark berry fruits, flavours of bramble, plum and griotte with notes of damson liqueur. As open and fruity as this is, there is also density and a tight-knit focus. A solidity and complexity gives dimension and balance to the overt, silky, perfumed fruit. The mid palate is solid and structured, whilst the finish is fragrant and fruity. An intense, composed Chateauneuf that displays as much class as it does intensity.
critic reviews
A blend of 60% Grenache Noir and 40% Syrah, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape le Plateau de Mont Redon possesses a deep, complex and spicy bouquet of smoke, blackcurrant and blueberries. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and structured, it's dense and broad with a tannic mid-palate, concluding with a licorice-inflected finish. This is a muscular, demonstrative Chateauneuf-du-Pape. It needs time to chill out.
Made with grapes from old vines between 80 and 100 years of age, the 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Le Plateau de Mont-Redon is composed of equal proportions Grenache and Syrah. It mingles bright aromas of ripe red and black cherry, licorice, dried herbs, cloves, mint and wood smoke. Full-bodied, packed with flavor intensity and wrapped in ripe tannins, it concludes with great persistence on the savory finish. Only 4,500 bottles produced.
