A blend dominated by old Grenache (90%, with up to 10% 50-year-old Syrah vines). Floral and silky like the “Tradition” blend but much more layered and complex with flavours of dark cherry, strawberry, cherry stone and crème de mûre combined with savoury garrigue, oregano and fennel nuances, heady but glorious. This is a cuvée created by the Usseglio brothers as a homage to their grandfather. Centred around Grenache from vines averaging 80 years old, planted on a mixture of three differing terroirs – galets roulets, clay and sand, aged in a mixture of large cuve, and up to 20% used demi-muid barrels and smaller oak barriques.

Inky ruby. Red and dark berries on the highly perfumed, floral-accented nose. Lush but energetic, offering intense black raspberry and lavender pastille flavors and showing strong spicy cut. Fine-grained tannins give shape to a strikingly long, sappy finish. Superbly energetic and rich.

Thierry & Jean Paul Usseglio run this fine Châteauneuf estate that comprises 24 hectares across the appellation of varying parcels planted on either galets roulets, clay/limestone or sandy soils. The approach is measured and not too interventionalist, the emphasis is on fruit quality, grapes are destemmed prior to fermentation and ageing takes place for 12–15 months in a mixture of concrete vat, wooden foudres and oak barriques depending on the cuvée. These stunningly complex, silky richly fruited wines make for an excellent modern, highly refined take on tradition.
