    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note
Emrich Schönleber, Halenberg, Riesling, Grosses Gewächs, 2020

As the majority owner of this fabulous blue slate and quartzite vineyard, the Schönleber family have long teased out its finer elements. The 2020 is complex and spicy, showing fabulously precise fruit and citrus, red apple and great minerality and saltiness. Such clarity. With a long steely finish, this is concentrated and intense but also very pure. A wonderfully balanced expression of this blue slate vineyard. Werner Schönleber is convinced it is one of the best they've made.

The 2022 Riesling Monzinger Halenberg Grosses Gewächs comes with a timid nose. A subtle tropical top note and a serene aroma of iced mint appear teasingly, captivating in its shimmering and subtle aromatic spectrum. The palate has this cool aspect, too. Freshness is buffered by a gentle yeasty creaminess that verges into a soft white citrus pith. The 2022 is smooth, slender, elegant, beautifully textured and vivid. The finish is incisive and elegant, with lasting lemon length. (Bone-dry)

A great Nahe estate that was started by Werner Schönleber in the 1960s with just two hectares. Today the estate comprises 14 hectares, mainly Riesling, on the slate and quartzite soils of the Halenberg and Frühlingsplatzchen vineyards. Intense vineyard work and spontaneous fermentation in old oak casks together with ageing in steel vat conspire to produce intense, long lived Nahe Riesling that combines floral, charming qualitites with intense minerality. For the last five years, this estate has been perfoming to is maximum, rivalling Germany’s very greatest producers.
