Halenberg, Riesling, Grosses Gewächs, 2024
Introspective again, as these GGs can be at the beginning; a closer look reveals a riper citrus and almost sherbet-like palate. Neat and crisp and fast, it offers lemons, grapefruit, slates and stones with tons of latent energy. The Halenberg GG 2024 represents just a third of a normal crop. Technically Halenberg is warmer than Frühlingsplätzchen, but its poor soils and quartzite presence lend a cooler profile to the wines – providing you pick it at the right time. Here, ripeness moves quickly.
critic reviews
The 2024 Halenberg GG has a fragrant nose with dense, very ripe fruit intertwined with notes of salt and rock. On the palate, the Halenberg is delicate, elegant and surprisingly light-footed yet compact and dry, with citrusy/racy acidity that makes it seem very lean at this early stage. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewachs in Wiesbaden, August 2025.
The 2024 Riesling Monzinger Halenberg Grosses Gewächs is from a site of Devonian slate. It opens with a smooth, creamy lemon tone. The palate has a beautiful roundness, with the heat of citrus that provides such a cooling, soothing energy that sinks deep into the soil. A lovely evenness defines this, despite all the brightness and stoniness. (Bone-dry)
