Kreuz, Spätburgunder, Grosses Gewächs, 2022

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Kreuz always seem to have a more expressive and spicier persona with respect to the Kirchenstuck, which is a little silkier and sweet-berried by comparison. Kreuz 2022 is more on the red fruits with background notes of herbs, fine earth and even a touch of caraway, advancing on the palate with a wash of mineral-rich, ripe tannins and long edgy finish. Kreuz is home to the first grafted Burgundian Pinot clones in Germany, planted at the same time as Huber’s Wildenstein. The rootstocks in this Oppenheim vineyard are an impressive 70 years old and the plants date back to 1996. On a gentle incline of 30%, facing southeast, the soils are loess and limestone.

Winemaker HO Spanier's 2022 Oppenheim Kreuz Spatburgunder GG opens with very clear, fine, elegant fruit with delicate slate finesse on the bouquet, while being deep, intense and spicy but always balanced. Silky, elegant and juicy on the palate, it's still slightly mealy and with noticeable wood in the tannins. This is a fresh, rather delicate but concentrated and intensely fruity Pinot with a young, correspondingly tight finish. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewachs in Wiesbaden in August 2024.

The 2022 Spätburgunder Oppenheimer Kreuz Grosses Gewächs has the smokiness of a just-extinguished candle on the nose. Immediate and concentrated freshness strikes on the palate, where ripe tannins are already fused and smooth, framing tart but ripe red cherry juiciness. This has elegance and sinew, a shapely body and much allure. It walks a beautiful tightrope between finesse and generosity, finishing so juicy and so long. (Bone-dry)
