Plush, with ripe cherry and bramble fruits giving the wine an attractive openness and florality even before bottling. Produced from Burgundian clones, it has a lovely fruitiness and pleases from the outset. Kreuz is home to the first grafted Burgundian Pinot clones in Germany, planted at the same time as Huber’s Wildenstein. The rootstocks in this Oppenheim vineyard are an impressive 70 years old and the plants date back to 1996. On a gentle incline of 30%, facing southeast, the soils are loess and limestone.

The 2024 Spätburgunder Oppenheimer Kreuz Grosses Gewächs is from old vines grafted over to the 667 clone in 1996, one of the first field grafts in Germany. It is made in second-use barrels sourced from Méo-Camuzet, made by Francois Frères. The nose is a symphony of creamy smoothness, ripe red cherry and a touch of dark chocolate. Suppleness and smoothness on the palate speak of the finest tannins and ripe dark red cherry fruit. Concentration is undeniable, but so is vivid freshness. This is as bold as it is elegant. Give it time to calm; it will be exquisite. The finish is all pure cherry. (Bone-dry)
