Barolo, Margheria, 2016

justerini & brooks tasting note

An earthy clay and mineral inflected nose with a drop of balsamic. The palate has a burlier structure than the Bricco Fiasco, offering notes of blackberry, wild cherry and some herbs. Stony, gripping and savoury finishing on an intense saltiness. From a prime south and south west facing 55-year-old plot in the Serralunga d'Alba commune planted on white clay and limestone soils. Azelia’s vines sit alongside those used for Gaja’s Sperss. Aged in the traditional way, for 28 months in large slavonian oak botti.

critic reviews

95.5/100Antonio Galloni,Vinous

The 2016 Barolo Margheria shows the natural weight and gravitas of Serralunga in its dark flavor profile and textural resonance. Black cherry, plum, lavender, spice, mint, chalk and bright saline notes are all laced throughout. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2016 possesses tremendous persistence and class to burn. Wilder suggestions of sage and lavender add savory top notes, while searing tannins punctuate the finish.
