Langhe Rosso La Villa, 2022
Silky, sweet and glossy, broad and luscious, complimented by notes of licorice and spice. A blend of 60% Nebbiolo and 40% Barbera from Arborina, fermented and aged in 100% new oak barriques for 18 months. The name La Villa is taken from the original plot for this wine in Monforte d’Alba. Many moons ago they lost the lease on that vineyard but trademarked the name for the blend.

The Elio Altare 2022 Langhe Rosso La Villa is 60% Barbera and 40% Nebbiolo. Again, we're looking at a 15% alcohol content, which is quite strong, but the wine has the fruit succulence and the power to match that alcohol. However, you're definitely getting a full-bodied red from Piedmont with acidity and some tannic bite to pair with a cheesy or buttery dish. This release of 1,300 bottles sees 18 months in new barrique.
The 2022 La Villa, Altare's Nebbiolo/Barbera blend, is superb. Even after all these years and the fading presence of this category, La Villa remains relevant—an essential wine in the Altare range. Sumptuous dark fruit, new leather, licorice, gravel and cloves saturate the palate. What a gorgeous wine this is.
