Barolo, Gramolere
Fratelli Alessandria

Barolo, Gramolere, 2016

justerini & brooks tasting note

Salty and crystalline. Chewier but with a diamond-cut fruit and a firmer more masculine herbal, darker profile than Monvigliero. Dark fruit notes of blueberry, cassis and a complex rosemary-infused meat quality, too. Vibrant and long and finishes on fruit. From Vittore’s mother side of the family, this is a vineyard that came from the Manzone estate in Monforte in 2001. The vines are 55 years old. Higher than Verduno, at over 400 metres above sea level and with browner/ red soils this yields completely different wines.

The 2016 Barolo Gramolere is another striking wine in this range from Vittore Alessandria. It offers a fabulous combination of structure and depth that makes it easy to appreciate in the early going, in relative terms. Bright red berry fruit, chalk, white pepper, dried herbs and deep spicy notes are all laced together. Somewhat surprisingly, the Gramolere is the most approachable of the 2016s today, although I would not plan on opening a bottle for at least a few years.
