Marco Marengo

Barolo, Brunate, Riserva, 2016

justerini & brooks tasting note

An absolute stunner, the best old vines Brunate we have ever tasted from Marco. This has all of the nuance, refinement and intensity of Barolos that are twice the price. Aromatic and layered, this boasts complex red fruit notes of strawberry, raspberry and griotte mixed with ground sweet spice touches and shimmering mineral highlights. Pure, refreshing and tense but without ever being austere, the silky minerals wrap softly around the fruit and bind all of the elements together. The flavours expand further the longer this sits in the glass and increases in intensity as it builds to a long echoing finish. One of the top Cru vineyards of Barolo, situated high up in the La Morra commune. Well protected and exposed with a nice mix of silt and clay soils this vineyard makes wines of power and refinement in equal measure. The Riserva comes from old vines the heart of Brunate, the upper middle part, planted in 1942. Produced in the same way as the other Cru wines – aged for 24 months in 25% new oak barrels - but kept an extra two years in bottle. Only 790 bottles were made
