The Paje vineyard is an ampitheatre in the centre of the Barbaresco commune facing south west and planted on limestone soils, sitting just below Rabaja. The wine is laden with fruit earth and spices, hints of smoke, cinnamon and tobacco leaf mixed with bright red fruit. Fresh and chalky in style, the fine grained tannins provide gentle support to the fruit, resulting in a very engaging, drinkable wine that has the ability to age.

Luca Roagna’s 2010 Barbaresco Pajè is one of the Barbarescos we featured in a recent Roagna masterclass that kicked off this year’s La Festa del Piemonte; the other two were the 2014 and 2016 editions.From the moment I open the bottle, I know we are in for a treat. Heady Nebbiolo perfume completely fills the room. In my experience, only Barolo and Barbaresco can deliver that kind of aromatic sensory overload. What an experience. I usually taste Piedmont wines young, upon release, and then again as older wines, 10-12 years after the vintage. The 2010 Pajè is in a perfect spot where it has lost some of its youthful intensity and tannin, yet remains quite vibrant. Beautifully layered on the palate, the 2010 gets better and better over time as it opens to reveal all the dark, balsamic-tinged notes this site is so famous for. The Roagna wines have become quite pricey, which is why I often suggest readers focus on the Pajè and its sister wine, the Barolo Pira, which remain far more accessible than the smaller production wines. Readers lucky enough to own the 2010 Pajè are in for a treat. Quite simply, it is everything Barbaresco can and should be. I loved it.

Roagna

The Roagnas have been making Barbaresco since the late 19th century. After taking over from Alfredo after the 2001 vintage, Luca Roagna has kept true to the traditional wine-making of previous generations whilst fine-tuning it to turn out pure, unique Piedmontese wines that are sought-after the world over. The family’s 16 hectares are split between Barbaresco and Barolo, with some choice parcels in some of the region’s finest vineyards, including the monopole Pira of Castiglione Falletto. Picking here is usually late so that the seeds are ripe. The wine-making is gentle long and slow, fermentation is in large old oak casks and maceration times vary between 60 to 90 days depending on the wine and the vintage. The wines are released later than almost any others in Piedmont, being aged for between 5 to 8 years in cask. These are beguiling, intense soulful wines.
