Barbera d'Alba, Riserva, Pozzo dell' Annunziata, 2011
A wonderful saltiness and energy offsets the intense, sweet liqueur fruit. Notes of herb, kirsch, raspberry and crème de Mure. The flavour profile is rich and ripe but there is a nice streamlined quality to the shape of the wine thanks to a sappy freshness and salty minerality. One of the most special Barbera bottling there is. A blend of wine from the Pozzo and Annunziata vineyards both in the La Morra commune. The vines aren’t particularly old, averaging 20 years; however, the extraordinarily high planting density makes for microscopic yields, only half a kilo per vine. The wine is aged in new barriques, 40% new oak.

Another standout, the 2011 Barbera d'Alba Riserva Vigneto Pozzo dell'Annunziata is incredibly refined and silky in this vintage. Hints of lavender, rose petal, mint and sweet spices add nuance as the 2011 shows off its striking personality and compelling balance. The Pozzo has always been a wine of impact, but the 2011 takes things in a direction that gives much more importance to balance and elegance, which is great to see.
