Barbera Riserva, Pozzo dell'Annunziata, 2008
Deep, rich in colour and flavour, bright, racy red fruit acidity, hints of herb and menthol, crisp, juicy and complex savoury sap and mineral notes, long and multi-layered. A blend of wine from the Pozzo and Annunziata vineyards both in the La Morra commune. The vines aren’t particularly old, averaging 20 years; however, the extraordinarily high planting density makes for microscopic yields, only half a kilo per vine. Aged in new oak for a year and a half.
critic reviews
(bottled in magnums; aged for two years in 30% new barriques): Bright, deep saturated red. Primary aromas of black cherry, licorice, menthol and violet. Boasts uncanny sweetness and density, with fresh acidity giving the wine lovely inner-mouth tension and a firm structure. In a powerful, virile style, finishing with a whiplash of dark fruits and flowers. Voerzio farms his barbera like his nebbiolo vines. They're planted at very high density (up to 8,000 plants per hectare), and each vine ultimately yields between 500 and 700 grams of fruit. Incidentally, there is no 2009 Pozzo as the wine couldn't finish its fermentation.
