Etna Rosso, San Lorenzo, 2021
San Lorenzo is one of three sites that the estate considers to be a true Grand Cru. Incredibly succulent and perfumed with lusciously refined, velvety red fruits, and beautifully polished tannins, the soils here are marked by obvious lava flows which buried the oldest “Elliptical” soils deep into the earth. The only three sites of true “Elliptical” soils on the north side of Etna are Bocca d’Orzo, Calderara and San Lorenzo. San Lorenzo is the Contrada that marks the North West border of the DOC and therefore has the coldest climate of the three. This climate combined with soils especially rich in ash, makes for a unique combination.
critic reviews
The 2021 Etna Rosso San Lorenzo seduces with its perfumed blend of roses, sour cherries, tangerine and a cinnamon dusting. This is pure elegance, lifted and refined, with dazzling acidity and a wave of pure mineral-tinged fruits that crackle and pop across the palate. It’s complex yet truly delicious and maintains marvelous energy, even as a web of fine-grained tannins reminds the taster of its youthful state. Even today, the 2021 San Lorenzo is dreamy and a total pleasure. That said, the future remains very bright.
