Case Basse di Gianfranco Soldera, Rosso Toscana IGT Soldera 100% Sangiovese Dall'az. Agr. Casse Basse, 2006

From vines planted in 1972 grown on a mixture of clay limestone and schist soils at an altitude of 300 metres above sea level. The wine is fermented using wild yeasts and aged in large Slavonian oak vats. An extraordinarily pure and intense wine. Wonderfully bright, red cherry fruit, glorious vital and alpine pure, flavours of cherry stone, herb, fruit blossom, currant and minerals. Bittersweet, fresh and floral. Ripe but cool and very moreish on the long finish. Perfectly weighted, outstanding.

Gianfranco Soldera’s 2006 Sangiovese is the last cask released during a tumultuous period for the estate that saw six vintages of wine in oak destroyed by a disgruntled former employee. Soldera first released his 2006 as a Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, but became so infuriated with his colleague producers in the aftermath of the loss of his wine that he left the appellation and decided to bottle all of his future wines as simply Sangiovese. In the glass, the 2006 Sangiovese is exquisitely perfumed and lifted, with subtle layers of flavor that develop over time, and superb balance. Today, the 2006 is pure finesse.
