Brunello di Montalcino, Altero, 2007
The Altero Brunello is Poggio Antico's ode to innovation and experimentation, the grapes are sourced from the same vineyards as the Brunello and the wine is fermented in the same way, the main difference is the ageing which, for this, consists of 2 years of French oak tonneaux and 2 years in bottle. A concentrated but supple, pure and engaging wine, intense cherry, cherry skin and fruit stone flavours, touches of bullace and sweeter kirsch notes, ripe concentrated but fine and very juicy. From vines that face south 450 metres above se level, therefore ranking among some of the highest in Montalcino, Poggio Antico make refreshing pure and elegant Brunellos.
critic reviews
Good full red. Very pure but subdued aromas of raspberry, rose petal and spices, along with a suggestion of chocolate. Then almost surprisingly plush and sensual on the palate, and distinctly sweeter than the 2007 classico, showing a flavor of cherry liqueur. Extract-rich and dense in texture without betraying any heaviness. Finishes with excellent spine and thrust and good medicinal reserve. This will need time to absorb its serious dusting of tannins.
