Rosso di Montalcino, 2018
So alluring, aromatic and lifted - ripe summer strawberries, almond and heather with a touch of aniseed on the finish - sumptuous sweet tannins, ripe but flowing and seamless – you could drink this now but it has a fine acid line supporting the soft fruit. Really very smart. Produced from vineyards averaging 25 years old, situated at 200, 300, and 400 metres above sea level, with various expositions. The soil is poor and rocky, mainly composed of clay and limestone. The production area is located in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, facing the valley of the Orcia River. The harvest is made manually, and the grapes' selection follows the same precision adopted for the Brunello. Vinification is in oak vats, with spontaneous fermentations led by indigenous yeasts and extended macerations. The wine is aged for 22 months in 30 hl oak casks and was bottled in September 2020.
critic reviews
The 2018 Rosso di Montalcino wafts up with a dusting of exotic spice, with hints of lavender and violet pastille giving way to crushed blackberries. This opens with a pretty inner sweetness and ripe wild berry fruits energized by juicy acidity as rosy inner florals and tobacco form toward the close. Wickedly fresh and perfumed, the 2018 tapers off with medium length, ending with licorice traces.
This wine has more in common with a Brunello than it does a Rosso. Made with certified-organic fruit, Poggio di Sotto's 2018 Rosso di Montalcino is a very fine and smooth expression that caresses the senses. The bouquet is enlivened by forest berry, peat moss, lilac and wildflowers. The 2018 vintage is usually understated in personality, but this wine speaks of elegance and nuance. It's just stunning.
