Vadio is a project from the couple Luís Patrão and Eduarda Dias. Born in Bairrada, Luís divides his time between Bairrada and Alentejo, where he is also winemaking director at Herdade de Coelheiros. Eduarda, a Brazilian from Pernambuco with familial links to the Dão, has lived in Portugal for 11 years and runs the daily life of a small family business. The vineyards are managed primarily by Dinis Patrão, father of Luis and an early exponent of organic viticulture – a challenge in this humid region. The ambition of this small but highly talented team is a simple one; to raise the qualitative bar in Bairrada with a resolute focus on the indigenous varieties Baga, Bical and Cercial. By reducing yields, implementing modern trellising systems and farming properly with an extensive cover crop programme, they allow for minimal intervention in the cellar. The Vadio Branco is whole cluster pressed and spontaneously fermented in stainless steel and used oak. Aging is carried out for six months on the fine lees with no battonage and no malolactic conversion, released a year after vintage, while the Vadio Tinto sees two years in a combination of stainless steel, 500L barrel and large traditional wooden vats, plus a year in bottle before release. The Vadio sparkling wines are highly individual; the white a Solera aged non-vintage blend and the Rose a superbly pretty, delicate vintage wine produced from 100% Baga.
