Clay and iron soils. The deepest that they work with. A 2 hectare vineyard planted in 1968, west of Malmesbury towards Darling. Full bodied, richly textured yet succulent with a core of apple, dried herbs and honeysuckle. A wine of breadth and texture, but with poise and focus too – long, energetic, it creeps up on you and keeps going. Nothing overblown, just true to the soil and concentration of the vineyard.

The 2022 Chenin Blanc Hoë-Steen comes from ferrous soils on limestone; these vines planted in 1968 tend to be late ripening. It has a wonderful nose with a subtle reduction, real tension and focus, oddly reminiscent of a Coche Meursault! The palate is fresh and vibrant, quite tangy on the entry with a waxy texture, then becoming more linear and taut towards the minerally finish. Excellent.
