Pinot Noir, Ignis, Hemel en Aarde, 2020
Where Vrede is approximately 50% clay and 50% shale based, the Ignis site is cluttered with round pebbles on the surface with primarily decomposed granite underlying. Situated at 225m elevation in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Also north facing but more exposed to the wind, Ignis sees less disease pressure in general compared to the other two sites so has been farmed organically since 2015. Tons of strawberry, tobacco and tea leaves on the nose, as usual, but also with a touch of grass, freshly pitted red cherries, broader spices such as pink pepper and cinnamon, and again that typically pretty, floral finish.
critic reviews
The 2020 Pinot Noir Ignès comes from soils with much less clay than the Vrede in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde. The vines have been farmed organically since 2015. Crisp and focused on the nose, this has a little more marine influence, just a hint of oyster shell filtering through the dark berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a sappy entry, just a little more grip and chewiness than the Vrede, suggesting that it will benefit from 12-18 months in bottle. Lovely spicy aftertaste here.
