It is a great privilege to kick start our Germany 2025 coverage with a pre-release offer on the legendary Weingut Dönnhoff 2025s. A vintage that ranks amongst the finest of the past twenty years, we are delighted to offer a range that runs from dry to scintillating Beerenauslese.
The Winery A winery that needs little introduction, Dönnhoff is one of the most globally renowned German wine estates. The family has been in the Nahe region since 1761 and as winegrowers and bottlers since the turn of the twentieth century.
Cornelius is the fourth-generation winemaker, working with his wife Anne, to maintain the quality level that the world has come to expect. They are blessed with some of the most prestigious vineyard sites in Germany. Winemaking is carried out in traditional oak Stückfass or stainless steel, depending on the wine, favouring spontaneous fermentations, seeking to marry a crystalline purity of (ripe) fruit with the Nahe’s natural verve and mineral tension.
Vineyard profiles across the range are enticingly diverse and harnessed, from slate to sandstone, loess and porphyry, the Dönnhoff wines embrace Riesling’s ability to transmit terroir arguably better than any other white grape in the world.
The 2025 Vintage A warm, steady, near-perfect vintage that brought a smile to growers’ faces after the devastating frosts of 2024, the smallest harvest in history.
Small, loose clusters from uneven berry set in Spring and the beautifully warm, dry 2025 summer, meant that phenolic maturity arrived early, enabling the estate to select grapes for the full spread of traditional Pradikat wines – up to Beerenauslese. Ripening accelerated at the end of August and with the threat of rain late in September, they opted for a rapid harvest, finishing on 21st of the month, before a deluge of rain that would have inevitably diluted the grapes and posed challenges with rot. The wines balance the freshness of an early pick with the vintage’s natural concentration and texturally fine, high levels of dry extract, buffering acidity and mineral structure.
“It was a vintage that could have been overly turbo and powerful, but we managed to pick at the right time and control it, the wines have a bit more flesh and muscle and completeness to them than the more ‘pointed’ 2024s.” – Cornelius Dönnhoff
