Château Calon Ségur, 3ème Cru Classé, St Estèphe, 2013
Laurent Dufau, Vincent Millet and Eric Boissenot have produced an exquisite 2013 Calon Segur. This is the highest proportion of Cabernet ever used and jolly smart it is to. Floral, cherry blossom notes and hint of eucalyptus. Classic, cool fruit core. This is a classy St Estephe, very much in the traditional Calon Segur style but perhaps with a little more precision and finesse. 19% press wine has been used, but it is beautifully integrated. The tannins are ripe and complement the ripe core of fruit. Lovely energy and clear fruit.

The 2013 Calon Segur is medium garnet in color, with a touch of brick. It has quite an oaky nose to begin, offering glimpses at underlying notes of dried cherries, fruitcake, and rosemary, with a touch of iron ore. The medium-bodied palate is dominated by oak and herbal flavors, with a firm texture and a short finish.
The 2013 Calon-Ségur is light on the nose with loam, autumn leaves and leather aromas, though there is little sign of any herbaceousness. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasant, slightly tart entry. It's not complex with pretty blackcurrant and cassis fruit, but there is an attractive harmony and residual sweetness on the finish. Has character and lift, and an attractive kick of rosemary and turmeric spice. Silky black fruits also, old school but charming, ready to drink but no rush - lovers of Calon Ségur will find plenty to enjoy here, and it's a success in the vintage. 100% new oak.
