Les Pagodes de Cos, St Estèphe, 2024

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

2024 is a difficult year for second wines, but we were pleasantly surprised by Les Pagodes de Cos. The team has reduced the use of new oak barrels to just 20% to allow the fruit to shine. Initially presenting engaging aromas of strawberries and cream alongside an intriguing hint of Asian spice. The fruit on the palate has a charming purity, with a prickly, hedgerow fruit character. It concludes with a lingering note of fresh cherry and a lick of oak spice.

Deep garnet-purple in color. Features notes of fresh red currants and raspberries, plus nuances of dried Provence herbs, underbrush, and mossy tree bark. The light-bodied palate is refreshing and lightly chewy with just enough fruit and a savory finish.

The 2024 Les Pagodes de Cos matured in around 12% new oak. It has quite a rich bouquet for the vintage with black cherry, hints of cassis and black olive, the latter only emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied and a little spicier than expected, with chalky tannins and a compact finish. This will need two or three years in bottle.

Grilled and smoked aromatics on the opening, this has skilful construction, no question that the austerity is more marked than in recent years of this beautiful wine, but they have teased out cassis bud and rose petals, touch of mint leaf and bitter chocolate. Harvest September 23 to October 7, 54% of overall production. New label and bottle for this vintage to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Pagodes. 29hl/h yield.

The 2024 Les Pagodes de Cos wafts from the glass with aromas of dark berries, licorice and nicely integrated oak. Medium to full-bodied, polished and suave, it's impressively rich and layered for the vintage, with beautifully integrated tannins and acidity.
